Morgaine collapsed in a heap, her hands covering her ears. The wailing cry trailed off to a burbling moan. Bones ran up and gripped Maddock by the arm. “I guess they found someone to take your place.” The stairs climbed like a concrete zigzag that vanished into the gray shadows above. Another cry, this one rising to a shriek, echoed through the building. Maddock said, “Bones, you were loose in here for a while, where does this take us?” “Up as far as the fourth floor. I’ve got no idea how you get any higher.” “We’ll work that out when we have to. Let’s go back to the lab and see who they’ve got strapped to their table this time.” Bones glanced down. “What about her?” Maddock knelt at her side. “Come on, Morgaine, we desperately need your warlock-smiting powers.” She huddled tighter and shook her head. Maddock bent over, close to her ear, and said, “Can you return to Merlin’s cave and tell the Goblins of our situation?” “I can do that, but you face terrible dangers ahead.” “Then I ask one more thing. Watch over my bow and keep it safe. I’ll need it when we return.” Morgaine looked up, smiled weakly, and said, “That will be my mission on this quest. May the Powers of Light guide you and keep you.” With that, she floated back across the floor and disappeared. Bones let out a breath and said, “What’ll happen to her?” “Best case, everyone’s taken a hike by the time she returns.” “Who were those guys, anyway?” “First bunch were Pym’s commandos, same guys we tangled with before. I have no idea where the second bunch came from. Probably DEA after all, coming down on a suspected meth operation. They saw the shooting and opened up.” “That was a butt-load of firepower for a bunch of Feds.”

“Yeah, it’s a good thing we had Twinkletoes or we’d both be answering some tough questions right now. What next, Hiawatha?” Another anguished round of cries echoed down the stairwell. Bones pointed up. “Third level of Hell, don’t you think?” Maddock took the stairs two at a time, adopting a panther gait that made little sound. He couldn’t hear his friend Bones, but knew he followed right behind. A quick peek at the second floor, dim lights, “Mess hall,” Bones said. Maddock nodded. Next floor up, he hesitated and said, “That could have been me.” “But it wasn’t. Let’s go.” The screams had diminished to a series of low, choking moans. Maddock pulled the door open a crack and checked the hall. Dim, empty, he slipped inside. Bones stepped past him. “This way.” The moans grew louder. Three doors down, Bones halted and glanced inside. An arm wave and they both entered. The moon hadn’t quite settled below the mountain’s flank. Maddock’s eyes adjusted to the pale illumination. A figure in white was strapped to the same table he himself had occupied the day before. They needed some light, despite the risk.
